Direct, Indirect and Minimal Wildfire Exposure, Explained
Three zones, one building at a time
USFS's building-exposure model doesn't just score a place — it classifies every individual structure into exactly one of three zones: Direct (in or immediately adjacent to burnable vegetation), Indirect (far enough away to avoid direct flame contact but close enough for wind-blown embers), and Minimal (neither). A community's overall exposure narrative on this site is built from which zone most of its buildings actually fall into.
What heavy Direct exposure looks like
Abanda, AL has the highest share of Direct-exposure buildings of any community in this dataset (100%) — a place where defensible-space clearing does more than any other single intervention, because most structures sit right where flame contact is possible.
What heavy Indirect exposure looks like
Casa Conejo, CA leads on Indirect exposure (100%) — buildings far enough from burnable vegetation to avoid direct flame contact, but exposed to ember cast, which is why vent screens and roofing material carry more weight than lot clearing in a place shaped like this.
What Minimal exposure looks like
Ashland, CA has 100% of its buildings in the Minimal zone — outside both other categories. Its wildfire risk, if any, comes from regional burn probability rather than proximity to burnable vegetation at the structure itself.
