Hardening targets the exposure zone you are actually in
The building-exposure data on every community page (Direct, Indirect, or Minimal — see the exposure-zones guide) points at different fixes. Direct exposure is a defensible-space problem first; Indirect exposure is an ember problem first. Treating both the same wastes effort on the wrong intervention.

Clearing flammable vegetation in the zone immediately around a structure is the single intervention with the most evidence behind it for buildings in USFS's Direct exposure zone, per CAL FIRE's Ready for Wildfire program.
Ember-resistant vents and roofing, for Indirect exposure
Wind-blown embers, not direct flame, are what typically ignite structures in USFS's Indirect exposure zone — through open vents, gaps under eaves, or a combustible roof. Lower-cost maintenance that helps regardless of zone
Gutter guards, keeping gutters clear of dry debris, and removing vegetation touching the structure directly are inexpensive relative to a full hardening project and help somewhat in every exposure zone, including Minimal.
